Thriving During The Night Shift

Whether you're used to working nights or are a bit nervous about your first scheduled shift, here are some helpful tips to help you stay alert and provide the best patient care.

Before your night shift

  • Be sure to get a sufficient amount of sleep before your shift.
  • Since you are sleeping during the daytime, be sure to block out sunlight from disturbing your sleep by using blackout curtains or by using an eye mask.
  • Refrain from consuming caffeinated products a couple hours before you sleep.
  • Don't look at your phone in bed so you can close your eyes and transition to falling asleep.
  • If you have several night shifts off in a row, use the last day off to ease back into the night shift routine. Wake up later during the daytime on the last day off to fall back into the sleep routine you would need to get back into night mode.

During your night shift

  • Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated and keep up with this during your shift.
  • If you are consuming caffeinated products, do so moderately. Too much caffeine can make you jittery and anxious.
  • Make healthy food choices. Avoid sugary high-fat foods. Opt for high-protein, low-sugar foods.
  • Don't skip your break times. It's important to relax to recover your energy for the rest of your shift.
  • Keep active during your shift. Catch up on other tasks while patients may be sleeping. It will keep you on your feet, stay productive, and fight fatigue.
  • Bond with your co-workers. Helping each other will help the time go by and get tasks done more efficiently if applicable.
  • Keep your friends and family in the loop. You may have different schedules, but don't forget to keep in touch with them and try to see each other around their schedules too.
