Hey, guys. This is Lexi from the travel and housing team, and this is Violet from the arrivals team. And we're gonna be talking today a little bit about bringing your pets to the United States when you arrive.

Okay Violet, do I need to tell my current assignee that I'm going to be bringing a pet?

Yes, absolutely.

It's incredibly important for both arrivals and travel and housing to know as soon as possible that you are bringing a pet. Pet seats on aircraft are limited, so it's important that we book those tickets quickly. Arrivals needs to check and make sure that your arrival coordinator is not allergic to the pet and travel and housing needs to ensure that the hotel is pet friendly, as well as any apartment options.

Cool. And then can my pet come during the arrival, or do I need to wait and ship my pet after I arrive?

This can be dependent on the pet breed.

It's primarily based on weight and size restrictions.

Ideally, yes, your pet can come with you when you first arrive to the United States.

In some cases, especially with larger breeds or pets that are ineligible to ride in the cargo hold of an airplane, these animals may need to be shipped afterwards.

You should know that shipping pets is more expensive than carrying them with you on the airplane. So we do try to avoid this option when we can.

Lexi, can I bring multiple pets with me?

Yes, you can.

The CDC allows multiple pets to enter the United States at the same time. If it's more than three of the same animals, so say you're gonna be bringing three dogs. The requirements are a bit stricter. I've got this pulled up on the CDC's website here.

You can only fly into certain airports because the pets have to be checked by a CDC animal care facility.

And those only exist at MIA, JFK, IAD, ATL, and LAX airports.

Can my pet ride in the plane with me?

So, yes.

Usually, the pet is good to fly in cabin, you know, under your seat with you, but it does depend on the breed and weight of the animal.

If it's too heavy to fly in cabin, it will have to ride in cargo.

If the breed is one that struggles to breathe in cargo, you know, then we have to look at shipping options if it's too heavy to ride in cabin.

Does my pet need her own ticket?

Your pet does not need your own ticket, or their own ticket, rather. They will be on your ticket listed as a pet, and you just well, I say you, but we will call into the airline and add those details for your pet.

What size should my pet's carrier be?

So this is dependent on weight and breed as well. You'll see here I pulled up Korean Airlines, for example.

They've listed their dimensions and, you know, the requirements or restrictions rather, for an in cabin or a cargo carrier.

Most end cabin carriers need to be soft sided. Most cargo cabins need to be hard side for the pet safety. So it all depends on the airline, and each airline has their requirements listed online, just like Korean does here.

What documents does my pet need to travel?

So this is, also dependent on where you're flying from.

Your home country, there is a list of high risk countries for rabies, and if you are flying from one of those countries and you're bringing a dog, the CDC requires, you know, special permit or importation, documentation.

And that's something that you have to get in advance and make sure that your vet records are really up to date.

This is not nearly as strict for a country that's not high risk. And again, I'm talking about a dog.

Cats are a little bit easier.

So just it really depends, where you're coming from. But again, the CDC lists everything.

And then the CDC links to this website where, it breaks it up by state. And if there are any kind of state requirements, they're listed on these websites.

So that is just a general summary of bringing a pet to the US.

We can help you do it.

If you have any more specific questions, feel free to reach out to the travel housing team or your current assignee, and we can help out.

Thanks, guys.
