What to Expect from Acute Care Nursing in the USA

In this month’s Nursing in the USA segment, Ashten Johson and Ryan Kiefer from our Quality Improvement Nurse team explained why acute care experience is essential for nurses preparing to work in US hospitals. Acute care refers to settings where patients have complex, rapidly changing conditions—requiring strong clinical judgment and quick decision-making.

US hospitals often care for high-acuity patients, making bedside experience one of the most important foundations for success. Nurses are expected to recognize subtle changes, act quickly, and communicate clearly with care teams.

Key takeaways:

  • Acute care involves managing patients with complex and rapidly changing conditions.
  • Strong assessment skills and early intervention can prevent serious complications.
  • Bedside experience builds confidence, critical thinking, and clinical judgment.
  • US healthcare environments are fast-paced due to technology, patient acuity, and coordination across teams.
  • Repetition and real-world experience help nurses adapt and succeed in high-pressure situations.

Building this experience before arriving in the US can strengthen your resume and prepare you for interviews and clinical expectations. With support like NCLEX preparation, paid licensure assistance, and clinical readiness programs, nurses can confidently transition into US practice.

Start Your US Nursing Career in New Jersey

This month’s featured location spotlighted New Jersey—a state known for its diversity, convenience, and access to major cities like New York City and Philadelphia.

New Jersey offers a balance of suburban living and urban access, making it an attractive option for nurses and families looking to build a stable life in the US.

Key takeaways:

  • New Jersey offers diverse communities, coastal towns, and suburban neighborhoods.
  • Residents experience all four seasons, from snowy winters to warm beach summers.
  • Average rent for a one-bedroom apartment ranges from $1,400 to $1,900 depending on location.
  • Public transportation is widely available near major cities, while suburban areas often require driving.
  • Multicultural communities make it easier for nurses and families to feel at home.

Caselle, a nurse currently living in New Jersey, shared that while the cost of living can be higher, proper financial preparation and support make the transition manageable.

“The cost of living here is really high, but I was supported by Health Carousel and prepared more than $2,000, and I was able to thrive.”

With arrival support, housing assistance, and guidance on settling in, nurses can feel more confident starting their lives in locations like New Jersey.

Real Nurse Experiences: Adjusting to Life and Work in the US

In this month’s Scrub Talk, Caselle shared firsthand experiences about working and living in the United States. These real stories help future nurses understand what to expect beyond clinical preparation.

From adapting to new technology to building a support system, these insights highlight both challenges and successes.

Key takeaways:

  • Advanced technology, such as surgical robots, may be new but improves patient care and workflow.
  • Connecting with other nurses before arrival can make the transition smoother.
  • Community support plays a major role in adjusting to a new country.
  • Benefits like health insurance can significantly reduce major expenses, including childbirth.
  • Staying prepared with documents is essential, as visa timelines can change quickly.

Having a strong support system—from peers to dedicated program coordinators—can make a meaningful difference during your transition. As Caselle shared about connecting with others before and after arrival:

“There were already Health Carousel International nurses here. They oriented me on what I need to do, helped me find an apartment, and guided me when I started working.”

April Visa Bulletin Update for EB-3 Nurse Visas

The March broadcast also included the April Visa Bulletin update, providing important insights into priority date movement for EB-3 visas.

There was positive progress for several regions, offering encouragement for nurses waiting for their opportunity to move forward.

Key takeaways:

  • Rest of World and Mexico saw forward movement of 8 months.
  • China advanced by 1.5 months, showing continued progress.
  • India had no movement this month.
  • The Philippines did not move in April but advanced by 2 months in March.
  • Priority dates remain unpredictable, so preparation is critical.

Nurses are encouraged to continue gathering documents, preparing for interviews, and staying ready for when their priority date becomes current.

With support like early petition filing, document guidance, and ongoing updates, nurses can stay on track throughout the immigration process.
