January 2025 Employee of the Month Nominees: Honoring Stories of Growth, Courage, and Purpose

At Health Carousel International (HCI), we believe that behind every successful healthcare professional lies a powerful story—of perseverance, passion, and purpose. As we step into a new year, we are honored to introduce our first set of nominees for 2025. These healthcare professionals exemplify the resilience required to not only cross borders but to also build lasting impact in new communities across the United States.

Their stories remind us that success in healthcare is not just about clinical knowledge, but it is also about adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and a relentless commitment to learning and service. Let us introduce you to the inspiring January 2025 nominees.

Shiera L., RN

Current State: South Carolina
Country of Origin: Philippines
Specialty: Medical-Surgical, Pediatrics

From the busy wards of the Philippines to the hospital corridors of South Carolina, Shiera’s journey into US healthcare has been one of growth anchored in faith. With over a decade of experience in medical-surgical and pediatric nursing, Shiera is no stranger to the demands of the profession. Yet arriving in a new country brought new challenges and new lessons.

For Shiera, success in nursing goes beyond skills and is rooted in character. “I’ve learned the importance of flexibility,” she reflects.

“You must adjust not just to new systems, but to a new way of life. And most of all, I’ve learned to keep the faith and always ask God for wisdom and strength to care for patients.”

Shiera’s warmth extends to her love for simple joys like burgers and pizza, which now offer a taste of comfort after long shifts. She represents thousands of international nurses who begin again in unfamiliar places and bring extraordinary care with them.

Kristel V., RN

Current State: New Jersey
Country of Origin: Philippines
Specialty: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) requires precision, patience, and a deeply compassionate heart, Kristel brings all three to her role. A NICU nurse from the Philippines now practicing in New Jersey, Kristel followed in the footsteps of colleagues who spoke highly of Health Carousel International. “Their experience gave me the confidence to pursue this opportunity,” she says.

Her transition to the US wasn’t just a geographical shift, it was a personal evolution.

“I’ve learned how critical it is to be adaptable in a dynamic healthcare environment,” she explains. “But more than that, I’ve grown through communication and cultural sensitivity. Being able to collaborate with my team and communicate compassionately with patients has shaped how I practice.”

New York-style pizza has quickly become Kristel’s favorite indulgence, symbolic of her seamless integration into her new surroundings. Folded slice in hand, she carries her Filipino heritage and professional pride into each patient interaction, day after day.

Mary Jain P., RN

Current State: New Jersey
Country of Origin: India
Specialty: Labor and Delivery (L&D), Nurse Preceptor, Charge Nurse

Arriving from India with over 15 years of experience, Mary Jain has seen many sides of nursing, from the fast pace of Labor and Delivery to the responsibility of serving as a Preceptor and Charge Nurse. But what has remained consistent is her grounded approach: lead with ethics, learn continuously, and uplift those around you.

“My friend, a Filipino nurse, told me about HCI,” she says. “What convinced me was how transparent the process was. No fees, clear communication, and consistent support. That’s what made all the difference.”

Today, Mary Jain practices in New Jersey with quiet strength and confidence. “Be confident,” she advises. “Work in line with policy, always keep learning, and apply your education to your practice.” She believes success in the US healthcare system lies in staying updated and grounded in core values.

Her go-to treat? Chocolate chip cookies—warm and timeless, just like her approach to care.
