Meet Rhiza C., Our 2026 Allied Health Hero
Allied Health Week gives us an opportunity to recognize the healthcare professionals whose expertise contributes to patient care in countless ways, including important work that patients may never directly see.
This year, we invited our allied healthcare professionals to share their journeys, challenges, accomplishments, and what continues to inspire them.
We’re proud to recognize Rhiza C., a Medical Technologist currently working in Maine, as our 2026 Allied Health Hero.
Rhiza has spent the past five years working in healthcare, but Medical Technology was not always the career she imagined for herself.
A Practical Choice That Became a Purpose
When choosing a career path, Rhiza initially saw Medical Technology as the practical option.
Physical Therapy would have taken longer to complete, while Pharmacy was a path she decided not to pursue because her sister was already in the profession.
What began as a practical decision eventually became something much more meaningful.
Rhiza found a place in healthcare that suited both her strengths and the way she wanted to contribute to patient care.
Medical Technologists may not always be at the bedside or directly witness a patient’s recovery, but their work can provide critical information that helps healthcare teams understand what is happening inside a patient’s body.
Every specimen examined, result released, and finding reported can contribute information that helps physicians make informed decisions about diagnosis and treatment.
For Rhiza, recognizing that impact changed how she viewed her profession.
What was once simply a practical choice became a career she is proud of and one that gives her a sense of purpose.
Finding Answers in the Smallest Details
One of the things Rhiza loves most about Medical Technology is the amount of information that can be discovered through materials most people might overlook.
Rhiza even connects her profession to the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
In the laboratory, something that may appear insignificant can reveal important clues about a patient’s condition.
That process of finding meaning in small details is part of what makes the profession fascinating to Rhiza.
Laboratory professionals contribute an essential piece of the larger healthcare picture. Although patients may never meet the Medical Technologist responsible for processing or analyzing a specimen, the results produced in the laboratory can help healthcare providers understand illness, make decisions, and determine the next steps in care.
For Rhiza, that behind-the-scenes contribution is one of the most meaningful parts of the profession.
Growing Through Change
Rhiza’s career has also required significant adaptability.
Moving between hospitals meant repeatedly learning new environments, getting to know new colleagues, and adapting to different standard operating procedures while continuing to work accurately and efficiently.
The transition became even greater when Rhiza began working as a Medical Technologist in the United States.
Along with adjusting to a new hospital environment, Rhiza was learning a different healthcare system, navigating new professional expectations, and adapting to a new life.
Rather than allowing those changes to discourage her, Rhiza approached them as opportunities to learn.
Her belief that there is always something new to learn has helped Rhiza become more adaptable, resilient, and confident throughout her career.
In fact, she chooses to view those experiences not simply as challenges, but as privileges.
Each new environment has given her another opportunity to improve her skills, move beyond her comfort zone, and become a stronger Medical Technologist for the patients who depend on the accuracy of the laboratory results she provides.
As Rhiza reflected, growth may be uncomfortable, but those uncomfortable experiences can often make us better at what we do.
Keep Learning, Even on the Difficult Days
Rhiza’s advice to professionals entering Medical Technology comes directly from her own experience:
Never let frustration weaken your determination to become better at what you do.
The profession requires much more than technical knowledge. Rhiza points to critical thinking, accuracy, patience, stamina, and the ability to remain focused even when the workload becomes difficult.
There will be demanding days. Staffing challenges can lead to longer hours. Workloads can become overwhelming. And because so much laboratory work happens behind the scenes, professionals may sometimes wonder whether others truly recognize their contribution.
For Rhiza, those are the moments when remembering the purpose behind the work becomes especially important.
Laboratory professionals may represent only one part of a much larger healthcare system, but their results help inform decisions, guide treatment, and contribute to patients’ paths toward recovery.
That responsibility motivates Rhiza to continue learning and improving, even when the work is difficult.
There is also something uniquely rewarding about a profession that allows someone to look through a microscope and discover how seemingly tiny details can help answer important questions about a patient’s health.
Her message to new Medical Technologists is simple: keep learning, keep improving, and don’t lose sight of why the work matters.
Or, as Rhiza put it:
“Sometimes, heroes don’t wear white coats. Sometimes, they wear lab coats.”
Congratulations, Rhiza!
Rhiza’s journey shows how an unexpected career choice can grow into meaningful work and a genuine sense of purpose.
From adapting to new hospitals and a new healthcare system to developing a deeper appreciation for the impact laboratory professionals make every day, Rhiza has continued approaching each new experience as an opportunity to learn.
Her story also reminds us that some of healthcare’s most important work happens outside of the patient’s view.
This Allied Health Week, we’re proud to recognize Rhiza Cordero as our 2026 Allied Health Hero and celebrate the dedication, resilience, and commitment to growth that have shaped her journey.
Congratulations, Rhiza!
