Carlsbad’s shopping and specialty retail are diverse, with unique options for furniture, gifts, home decor, and more. However, Carlsbad is also known for its outdoors recreation thanks to its location alongside the Pecos River and at the edge of the Guadalupe Mountains. One of the most famous areas of Carlsbad is the Carlsbad Caverns. Found in Carlsbad Caverns National Park in the Guadalupe Mountains, the caverns are a must-see. The park has more than 100 caves and you can embark in 3 of them on a self-guided or ranger-led tour. See bats, stalactite, limestone formations, and much more on this incredible destination. From April to October, the Caverns offers the National Park Bat Flight Program, where visitors can meet at the Bat Flight Amphitheater to learn about bats then watch thousands of them fly into the night sky.  There are also 8 hiking trails that will take you through the Chihuahuan Desert. On the outskirts of Carlsbad, you’ll find the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park, a sprawling 1,200-acre state park with multiple animal habitats. The park includes 1.3 miles of trails through cacti, a pine forest, sand dunes, and other terrain, providing a great place to see the diversity of nature. Animals at the zoo include cougars, kit foxes, elk, bison, and multiple birds can be seen in the aviary. In the summer months, children and adults cool down at the Carlsbad Water Park. The park features a lazy river, waterslides, speed slides, a children’s play area, and more.
