The World Health Organization (WHO) announced 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. It is also in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
These are some of the fast facts about Year of the Nurse (YON):
- Nurses and midwives account for nearly 50% of the global health workforce.
- There is a global shortage of health workers, especially in nurses and midwives.
- Nurses and midwives play a vital role in healthcare. These trusted professionals devote their lives to caring for mothers and children; giving lifesaving immunizations and health advice; looking after the elderly; and generally providing for patients' essential health needs.
- Nurses and midwives are often the first and only point of care in their communities.
- The world needs 9 million more nurses and midwives if it is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.
