Brewer School Department is the public school system for the area and has 2 schools: Brewer Community School for grades Pre K-8 and Brewer High School for grades 9-12. The student-teacher ratio is low at just 13 to 1. Test scores show that 40% of students are proficient in math and 54% are proficient in reading. Classes are taught in both schools using a proficiency-based learning system and 4-point grading scale rather than the traditional letter grades of A, B, C, etc. This innovative approach lets educators look at the skills and willingness to learn of each student, then judge them based on proficiency. This encourages all learners “to ask good questions, have the ability to research and answer those questions, and ask new questions based on the answers.” High school students have access to a computer thanks to the district’s 1:1 technology initiative.
