The public school system is the Rapides Parish School Board which is comprised of 27 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 11 high schools. The district includes magnet and Montessori schools to offer a well-rounded education to eager young learners. Schools have a low student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1 with nearly 70% of the students proficient in reading and math. A number of the schools offer free breakfast and lunch to their students to give students the nutrition they need for a busy school day. Students in grades 6-8 and 9-12 have the chance to participate in Rapides Academy for Advanced Academics and Virtual Learning. The grades 6-8 students will receive a challenging curriculum in a face-to-face environment designed to expand their horizons and give them a competitive edge as well as develop social skills. Students in grades 9-12 will be able to use the virtual learning program for online education. Multiple high schools within the district have been awarded the Bronze medal for Best High Schools in the Nation by U.S. News and World Report.
